Customers are looking for your business right now.
Do you want to appear at the top of your local search results?
Want these future customers to see your business in their Google search?
Would you like to know exactly which ranking factors help your business rank higher?
With local SEO, Google uses a separate ranking algorithm that takes into account various factors to produce the best results – and we have the latest information on Google’s algorithm updates.
On April 6, I hosted a sponsored webinar presented by Justin Meredith, Digital Marketing Evangelist at Birdeye, and Steve Wiideman, CEO & Sr. Search Strategist at Wiideman Consulting Group.
They dove into the latest Google search algorithm updates and provided strategies for using local search to your advantage to improve your search rankings.
Here is a summary of the webinar. To access the full presentation, fill out the form.
Updates to Google algorithm and search appearance
They say the only constant in life is change, and Google loves that. Here are recent updates from Google that have impacted local businesses.
- New map and local interface in search (December 2021).
- List updates can be made directly in search (December 2021).
- New Google Business Profile attributes (February 2021).
- Google News showcase (February 2022).

Despite all of Google’s changes, it seems like the only thing they’ve kept consistent forever is the reason for the changes.
Google’s goal is to provide consistent and reliable information to consumers searching online.
Tip #1: Do your research
Make sure your business information is correct and accurate. Perform a local SEO audit.
During your audit, you will want to check:
1. Data Accuracy.
Your phone number, address and PIN on the card must be correct.
2. Optimized local landing pages.
Make sure that the web page your visitors click on matches their needs and location.
Last year Wiideman’s team researched over 300 local landing pages for big brands like Starbucks and McDonald’s, the big ones with sometimes thousands of locations.
These top brand finds contained incredibly useful tips for local business websites.

3. Relevant quotes.
Be sure to get quotes from:
- Search engine.
- Navigation engines.
- Industry directories.
- Localized directories.
- Sites that generate traffic.
4. Well managed reputation.
Reviews are essential, so be sure to ask customers to leave reviews and add photos to Google Maps when possible.

Tip #2: Create a Complete Google Business Profile
In addition to using all the fields available in Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business), you can:
- Incorporate review language into actual product and service descriptions to think more like your customers.
- Ask your best customers to ask the questions that are in the questions and answers that appear in the search results.
- Upload photos and videos related to your business.

Tip #3: Establish a robust review management system
The power of word of mouth cannot be underestimated these days.
9 out of 10 consumers read reviews before buying a product.
Make it easy for customers to leave reviews, then listen to positive and negative reviews.

Tip #4: Create comprehensive content
It’s essential to have content for every possible search method someone might use to find your products or services.
Don’t just think about what your customers are looking for and how they search.
On the organic side of a local search, make sure you show up under the maps for more of those longer queries.
Tip #5: Use links and citations
Local businesses can get links and quotes by involving neighbors and the community.
You might need some creativity and a bit of leg work here, but it’s great for PR and yields rich results across the event schema.

For off-site visibility, prioritize a list of location page tests to improve organic rankings.
Tip #6: Increase activity
Help show search engines that your business is active, alive, real, and people are looking for you and coming to you.
● Optimized all fields available in the GBP.
● Use Google Maps when commuting to work.
● Take photos.
● Use the Google Image Recognition algorithm.
Be active and hold yourself accountable every month to improve every activity metric.
Wiideman also showed how you can get a free SEO KPI tracker that helps with overall accountability.
