Digital Marketing Expert Explores: Do Domain Extensions Really Affect SEO?

London, United Kingdom – January 21, 2022 – Over the past few years, digital strategy has become crucial to the success of a modern business – being on the first page of Google can make all the difference to sales and overall performance. Knowing this, business owners are paying increased attention to domain names and domain extensions – but how much of an impact does a domain extension really have on SEO efforts?

According to SEO specialists at The Brains, the reality is that domain extensions probably have no effect in terms of technical SEO. However, if you take a look at all the top searches, you’ll notice that the top spots almost invariably belong to .com or local domains, including .co.uk. However, this is probably more down to branding and human perception than SEO – people generally tend to trust .com domains, so they will favor them over lesser-known domains, which means these businesses receive increased traffic and conversions as a result. Knowing this, it’s much wiser to think of domain extensions as a branding exercise – and business owners should focus on creating a domain identity that matches their unique business.

It should also be noted that there are far more important factors to keep in mind when trying to optimize your website for SEO, including relevant and targeted keywords, long and regular content, accurate metadata and convincing and loading speed. Additionally, off-site SEO elements can make a huge difference – for example, a website with an .io extension and ten backlinks will outperform a website with a .com extension and zero backlinks – as with most things SEO, the subject is complex and domain extensions must be taken into account alongside a multitude of other elements.

On domain extensions and their overall relevance to SEO, James Speyer, Senior Account Strategist for SEO, says:

“There are a million ways to optimize your business website – and many of them will have far more impact and importance than a domain extension in terms of SEO. Rather than focusing too much about domain extensions from a technical point of view, it is rather worth looking at them from a branding point of view.Consider the fact that a company with a .com extension just packs more punch than a lesser known – it looks more official For clients, we always recommend a .com or .co.uk domain from a brand perspective, but not necessarily from an SEO perspective. – James Speyer, Senior Account Strategist for SEO, The brains
