Google Keyword Planner is a free tool that helps digital marketers with their research efforts, most often for search campaigns, both paid and organic.

It highlights different types of “keywords” or “search phrases and terms” related to your business.

Keyword Planner estimates the monthly search volume for certain keywords and how much it would cost to target them with a paid campaign.

And although Keyword Planner’s original intent was for paid search campaigns, the tool is valuable beyond search engine marketing (SEM).

How to Use Google Keyword Planner for SEO

Now, let’s walk through the steps for setting up the Keyword Planner and get you one step closer to your keyword research goals.

1. Create an account

First of all, you must have a Google Account to take advantage of Google Keyword Planner.

2. Log in

Once your new account is created, log in Keyword Planner.

3. Choose A spot

When logging into Keyword Planner, you will be presented with two options: “discover new keywords” and “get search volume and forecasts”.

If you’re not sure which option you’re looking for, go ahead and try one!

Discover new keywords

Discovering new keywords is a great option when looking to expand on the keywords, phrases, or topics you cover for your domain.

You can also use a domain URL to filter out suggestions that don’t match your business.

This will provide you with related keyword ideas, monthly search volume, year-over-year demand trend, level of competition, and cost-per-click (CPC).

You have the option to expand your search to include other keywords to give you more diverse keyword ideas.

You can also narrow it down to the desired criteria for location, language, and deadlines.

If you want to be even more specific, based on your search topics, you’ll have the option to narrow down by options like brand or make, new or used.

Get search volume and forecasts

This interface is very similar to the “discover new keywords” user interface (UI).

One of the biggest differences here is that you insert the keyword(s) you specifically want to search for, while the discovery tool gives you other ideas.

Once you’ve submitted your keywords, you’ll again see search volume, three-month change, year-over-year change, competition ranking, and low and high CPC prices.

We are going to step in and use “Discover new keywords”.

4. Define your criteria

Now comes the fun part!

You are presented with two options to begin the search.

One is to search with keywords or from a website URL. If you’re a brand new site and you know some competitors in the space, you might want to leverage their success to inform your strategy.

Using the “Start with a website” feature is a great option for this.

It offers the granularity of the entire site or a specific page and location.

5. Get your data

We will use the “Discover new keywords” option to [cookies] to see what level of data we can achieve.

If you want more detailed information, you can change the location and date range, add to your search scope, and narrow your options.

Now that you have all this great data, you might want to share it; and we have two options for that.

You can download the data via a CVS or Google Sheets file in the upper right corner.

This will give you more flexibility to manipulate and filter the data as needed.
