Some of the nation’s top junior golfers take to the stage for a 36-hole shootout at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Arizona this weekend during South West Junior Golfweek 2022.
The event features a boys and girls division, with the girls competing for eight prized performance stars from the America Junior Golf Association in addition to an invitation to the prestigious Golfweek International Junior Invitational in November.
The girls came out to play because there were three under par in the first round on Saturday. Jennifer Seo and Honorine Nobuta Ferry shot matching 69s under 3 to take a one-shot advantage over Annie Dawson (1 under).
Winner of the 2021 Thunderbird Junior Classic and looking for his sixth career win, Seo has his playing partners experience as a member of the Class of 2023.
Julia Herzberg and Zoe Newell are chasing the tied leaders. Four other golfers are within five strokes of the lead.
On the boys’ side, two-time defending champion Anawin Pikulthong started with a 3 of 75, good for a fourth-place solo finish.
Leading the boys side is Ryan ‘OT’ Sefrioui. Carding a bogeyless 68, Sefrioui took a four-stroke lead over his next closest pursuer, Alec Barker.
Rounding out the final group alongside Barker and Sefrioui, Lyman Brackett posted a 1 of 73 in his first round on Saturday.
With five golfers within eight strokes of the lead, Sefrioui will have plenty of chasers with 18 holes separating him from the championship.
