CHEYENNE, Wyo., July 2, 2019 / PRNewswire / – US Small Business Owners Spend On Average $ 497 per month on SEO services, according to a new study from Backlinko.
The survey also found that the higher monthly spend was linked to customer satisfaction. SEO clients who spent more $ 500/ month on SEO were 53% more likely to rate themselves satisfied with their investment.
The joint Backlinko-Northstar Research Partners survey interviewed a representative sample of 1,200 small business owners and decision makers based in United States. The survey was conducted online from March 28-April 1, 2019.
Their “2019 SEO Services Report” investigated several factors that impacted client satisfaction levels with SEO agencies and freelancers.
Overall satisfaction with SEO services is low: Using the Net Promoter Score, the survey found that only 30% of respondents would recommend their current SEO provider to a friend or colleague.
The turnover of SEO services is high: 65% of those surveyed said they had worked with several different SEO providers in the past. 25% said they had worked with 3 or more providers.
Most business owners move on because of the lack of results: 44% of small business owners leave their current SEO provider because of ‘dissatisfaction with the business results’. 34% cite poor customer service as a reason to move on.
The survey also looked at how small business owners choose specific vendors and, once the work begins, why they decide to keep or leave their SEO agency or freelance writer.
Most search for SEO providers through referrals, Google searches, and online review sites: 28% search for SEO services through individual referrals, 26% use Google, and 18% use review websites (like Yelp and Google Maps). Only 11% of panelists said they found their current SEO provider through offline advertising.
Reputation is the key: When it comes to choosing a specific service provider, 3/4 of business owners surveyed cited an SEO provider’s reputation as “very” or “extremely” important.
Small business owners expect SEO to improve results: 83% of our respondents said SEO providers need to help them ‘get to new customers’.

Methodology of the study
The study looked at 1,200 small business owners and key decision makers in United States. Respondents were evenly split between regions (23% based in the Midwest, 21% on the West Coast, 34% in the South and 22% in the Northeast), gender (52% female and 48% female and 48% female). % of men) and income (about half generate$ 1 million/ year and a half generate>$ 1 million/year).
