What is the impact of social media on SEO?

Social media and search engine optimization (SEO). Two very different aspects of digital marketing… at least that’s what we think. But in the reality of the digital marketing landscape, social media and SEO are two sides of the same coin.

If you are as connected to the digital world as my colleagues and I are, then you may have heard of this debate: Does social media have an impact on a website’s ranking in search engines?

Before answering this question, let’s define a few terms so that we’re all on the same page:

  • Social media: websites and applications that allow people to create and share content or participate in social networks.
  • SEO : the process of increasing the quality and quantity of a website’s traffic by increasing a website’s visibility to users of a search engine (Google, Bing, etc.) through methods not paid.

Okay, now let’s come back to this question. Do social networks have an impact on SEO? Based on the definitions you just read, what do you think? May be? Let’s move on to meat and potatoes.

Impact of social media on SEO

Social media has a direct impact on several factors that affect a website’s ranking in search engines. One of these factors is the generation of website traffic.

SEO is largely affected by website traffic, and social media positively impacts your website traffic by providing more visibility. When social media is shared, regardless of the platform, people will have the opportunity to interact with your content and visit your website. The more this happens, the better your search engine ranking will be. Besides increasing website traffic, trending tweets in particular can also appear in search engine results.

Let us focus for a moment on this word: “visibility”. That’s the whole point, isn’t it? Make sure your website shows up in search results earlier than others. Make it more “visible”. Social media ensures that your content reaches as many people as possible. Thanks to search engines, people only find your content if they are looking for something specific (keywords). Through social media, you can get content in front of people who wouldn’t think twice about Google searching for it. Simply put, more reach equals more traffic, and that positively affects your search engine rankings.

What is local SEO and how does social media affect it?

Another definition, I promise. Local Search Engine Optimization (Local SEO), similar to SEO, is the process of optimizing a website to rank higher for a local audience. Your business information (name, address, phone number, etc.) plays an important role in local search engine results. If this information is consistent and available across all social media profiles, it makes your website more credible and helps search engine rankings.

Additionally, geolocation of your social media posts can help your website gain visibility with your local SEO audience, thereby expanding your reach.
